Geneva Bible Notes on the passage above: The beginning of Christ*s kingdom will be small and contemptible in the sight of man, but it will grow wonderfully and flourish before God. Family Bible Notes: The reference is to Christ*s spiritual excellence, for which the carnally-minded Jews had no discernment. Unregenerate souls see nothing desirable in Jesus. Even though He may not have been physically exceptional, something made His disciples desire Him. He ALWAYS possessed the beauty of holiness. The only occasion when that beauty could not be seen was when the ugliness of our sin was upon Him as He died on the cross. 1 Peter 2:24: Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.Isaiah 52:14: As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: Psalms 147:1: Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.
Have you ever noticed how people, including yourself, become more comely when they are praising the Lord? Jesus must have been the most comely person that ever lived because He was always praising His Father, both in words and in the sinless life He lived. One day those of us who are believers will see the beauty of holiness perfectly and it will be upon us too. What encouraging thoughts for one as ordinary-looking as me!!! |
